A safe that is not anchored is a box with a handle on it — the most common way a home safe is defeated is that it leaves the house entirely. We size the safe to what is going in it, install it so it stays, and open it when a combination is lost or the lock has failed.

Can you open a safe without wrecking it?
Often yes. Many are opened by manipulation or by an approved bypass that leaves the safe usable. Where a destructive entry is unavoidable we say so first and explain what will need repairing.
Does it really need bolting down?
Yes. An unanchored home safe is carried away and opened elsewhere at leisure. Anchoring is the difference between a safe and a strong box.
