Lock Repair — common questions
Half the key snapped off in the lock. Should I try to pull it out?
Please do not. Pliers and superglue are the two things that turn a ten-minute extraction into a cylinder replacement — glue bonds the fragment to the pins and pliers push it deeper. Leave it and call.
My key is getting harder to turn. Is that the lock?
Often it is the door, not the lock. If a door has dropped or the frame has moved, the bolt is binding against the strike and you are forcing it every time. That is what eventually snaps a key.
Is a repair worth it, or should I just replace it?
If the cylinder is sound, repair is usually the better value and keeps hardware that matches the rest of the door. If it is worn through, we will say so rather than sell you a service that will fail again in six months.
